2 Corinthians 10:3-4 For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war according to the flesh. 4 For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds,
Demons are disembodied spirits, people with no bodies. They are not physical so we cannot fight them or defeat them in the physical. We cannot see them yet they are all around us watching and waiting for us to slip up so they can launch an attack.
Ephesians 6:12 For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places.
That is why a Believer has to always walk close to God and take every thought captive to the obedience of Messiah. Otherwise we will be easy targets. The Bible, the Word of God teaches us how to defend ourselves against an enemy that is smarter than us, stronger than us and invisible. It tells us this:
Ephesians 6:13-17 Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. 14 Stand therefore, having girded your waist with truth, having put on the breastplate of righteousness, 15 and having shod your feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace; 16 above all, taking the shield of faith with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one. 17 And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God;
In this, list Paul has given us 5 defensive items: girding our waist with truth, that is the truth of the word of God. The waist area is from where the body bends. So what Paul is saying is that we are only to bow down to the truth of God’s Word; the breastplate of righteousness, is the full righteousness of Yeshua HaMashiach. The chest covers the heart, righteousness comes from a pure protected heart; feet covered with the gospel of peace. We use our feet to walk. Paul is telling us that everywhere we walk, we should bring with us Yeshua’s gospel of peace, spreading His peace to everyone we meet. Next is the shield of faith. A shield protects the entire body. Here Paul is warning that Satan and his demons will attack anywhere on our bodies with the purpose of destroying our faith and causing us to doubt God; the helmet of salvation. The helmet protects the head which is our minds. We need to be secure in our salvation so that we will not be deceived and led astray by Satan. The next item Paul mentions is offensive; the sword of the spirit.
Hebrews 4:12 For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.
Our soul is what connects us to the earth, to humanity; our spirit connects us to God. Only the word of God can cut between the two and set us free from the carnal to serve the spiritual.
If we count them, Paul mentions 6 items of warfare in Ephesians 6:13-17 and most people stop here when quoting this passage, but there is one more offensive weapon in our arsenal and it is by far the most powerful against unseen demonic spirits.
Ephesians 6:18 praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, being watchful to this end with all perseverance and supplication for all the saints-
Prayer pierces the armor of Satan. We can direct it at any demon we want or at all the demons including Satan, they have no defense against our prayers. Satan’s greatest fear is praying Believers and this is the way we should be praying:
2 Corinthians 10:5 casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God,….
